People in the Northwest constantly use the wrong names for floating homes. Often the boats stored are rowing boats.
Probably the reason people make this mistake is because of another structure, a boathouse. Sometimes, a boathouse may be the headquarters of a boat club or rowing club.
Most boathousr someone will call a floating home a houseboat, but by definition, a houseboat is a boat, like Great Ambition. These were typically built with stone walls and timber roofs and would be either open to the sea or provided with sturdy doors.

A floating home on the other hand bosthouse not have motors, it cannot move under its own power, it just sits there tied to the dock, usually with chains some insurance companies require chains on your floating home!
Boathouses are also sometimes modified to include living quarters for people, or the whole structure may be used as temporary or permanent housing. This is a floating building that houses a boat to keep it dry and out of the weather. The floors would be a simple continuation of the beach sand or rock, or they might be dug down to permit a boat to sail into the boathouse.

The boathouse is also seen in reversides or lake sides. A boathouse is not a houseboat, and a houseboat is not a floating home. Other boats such Hkuseboat punts or small motor boats may also be stored.
